Honesty and quality are the two strong pillars of his successful entrepreneurship. Champakraj Gurjar, MD of Maxtone Electronics, is one of the respected first generation entrepreneurs in the IT fraternity. Entrepreneurial Journey
Champakraj Gurjar is the first generation entrepreneur hails from family of jewelry makers. However, he was always fascinated by machines and electronic components. PC industry was just taking baby steps when Gurjar entered into IT field. Computer was big product and mother boards were most troublesome product in IT. Gurjar at very early stage acknowledge that IT would be the future of India and decided to get into the component business. He founded Maxtone Electronics in 1987 and kick started his entrepreneur career with TV assembling.
“I entered in TV and VCR assembling business and started working with big factories in India”, recalls Gurjar.
But his fascination for electronics and urge to learn new technologies never led him to restrict himself only in assembling business. He started travelling to China and Japan to learn PC assembling. Motherboard was his favourite PC component and he learnt its manufacturing as well.
Gurjar wanted to start motherboard manufacturing in India. That was an era when duties and taxes were very high and import was a tough job. Government policies were not encouraging for local manufacturing. Therefore, he could not succeed due to lack of government support.
“We had planned to manufacture motherboard in India but it could not succeed because that time the government did not give favorable response”, regrets Gurjar.
“It is very tough to do business in India. If one can do business in India he can do business at any part of the world”, he chuckles.
Gurjar was one of the entrepreneurs who were quick to adopt changing market scenarios and modified their business according to demand of the industry. Going ahead he started trading of motherboards, Graphic cards, Sound cards and other PC components.
“That was our core business. In 2002, we had 40 percent market share in Graphic cards in the country”, recollects Gurjar.
Gurjar joined hands with big MNCs like Intel and Microsoft. He also took distribution ship of companies like HP and Lenovo. When Gurjar realized that growth in the PC segment was witnessing stagnancy, he entered into Mobile accessories business and all in one devices business.
Gurjar maintains healthy business relations with business tycoons in China and Taiwan.
“Whenever I get an opportunity to meet my Tawainees business friends, I always discus with them how can the two countries enable growth of manufacturing industry in India”, he says.
Honesty is the best policy
Gurjar says his father has gifted him strong values and ethics that holds him firm in the wavering world.
“I learnt from father that honesty is the best policy. And quality will always give good results. I have never compromised on these two things in my professional life”, Gurjar says proudly.
Gurjar says that quality is not always for sales, he always wants his customer to love his product.
“We always see quality of product and import from the companies who have goodwill in the market. I am proud that whatever products I bought in the country are excellent products. We innovate our own products from variety of products we bring from other parts of the world”, he says.
Wish to serve for the country
Gurjar is strong advocate of Make in India and dream to see India a leading manufacturing country in the world. He strongly feels that like other countries, India also must come up with its own brand built on indigenous technology and resources.
He has come up with all in one desktops and he is planning to come up with tablets and mini laptops. He is also planning to come up with lot of mobile accessory products and gadgets.
