Amazon earlier this week concluded its Amazon Web Service (AWS) India Summit 2013 Mumbai Edition, which was focused on cloud technology and conducted a day long event with multiple sessions that educated the attendees on the nuances like best practices on monitoring cloud resources, optimizing performance, managing security, application migration, and cutting costs.
AWS Summits are free, one-day events hosted in 12 major cities around the world. In India, it is held in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. These events are designed to provide developers and technical leaders with an introduction to the AWS cloud and guidance on architecture and engineering best practices.
The keynote session ‘Navigating the Cloud' was presented by Dr. Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer, Amazon wherein in he elaborated upon the key aspects and implications of cloud technology and the company's solutions portfolio which offers a pay per use model to its users.
Dr. Vogels stated, "Cloud technology is transforming the way industry is managing business. The key reasons for one to adopt these technologies are many. Economic drivers wherein companies can save expenditure on capital expenses, lower variable expense, manage capacity scaling with ease and flexibility, increase speed and agility by multi-folds." He further explained how companies can use the saved capital for innovations.
"Stop spending money on undifferentiated heavy lifts," states Dr Vogels. He further touched upon how companies can go global in minutes utilizing AWS platform as it is available globally wherein he cited example of Ramco using AWS to serve its customers around the globe using one single platform.

Currently, the early adopters of AWS has been BFSI, media and entertainment, manufacturing, hospitality, retail and e-commerce.
Following this, a panel discussion was held, wherein the panelist were customers of AWS. The panel included Amit Vora, CTO, Hungama, Ajay Kumar Meher, SVP & head, IT & post production, multi screen media, Sony Entertainment Television; Akhilesh Kataria, co-founder, Strata Retail & Technology Services and Jagdish Belwal, CIO, Tata Motors. Each individual shared their experiences with AWS and provided responses to queries raised by audience pertaining to cloud technologies and their experiences.
Following this, there were sessions which elaborated upon the best practices on monitoring cloud resources, optimizing performance, managing security, application migration, and cutting costs.
In addition, earlier in April, Amazon had launched a new AWS Certification Program with the first of several exams that will made available in 2013. This was in line with developments in the offerings by the company. The new AWS Certification Program helps to fill this need to recognize IT professionals that possess the skills and technical knowledge necessary for building and maintaining applications and services on the AWS Cloud.
