Much has been said about the rebound of the laptop in the new era of work from home and the hybrid work situations. Before the Corona struck, smartphones were on the rise and were on the verge of replacing the usage of laptops in the budget users segment. However, with a lot of office and school work to be carried out from home, the average buyer who doesn't have a lot of money to spend, would like to have an efficient laptop at a low cost.
Much has also been said about the E-commerce replacing the offline stores of IT gadgets. However, a quick look at the two large E-commerce websites shows that they in fact don't have many options available for the average buyers. Partially, this situation has arisen because of the peak in demand for the laptops, which the companies have not been able to supply. But partially, this situation is also because the E-commerce has not yet really penetrated in the non-metro areas, where most buyers still depend upon the offline stores.
According to an estimate given by the laptop resellers, 70% of laptops are still being sold by the resellers, while only 30% of laptops are sold online.
Further, many buyers are not aware of the finer implications of the laptop configurations written on the E-commerce websites and hence, resellers are in a better position to explain it to them.
So, what can the laptop resellers suggest to this category of buyers?
Following are some suggestions which the resellers would do well to give the buyers of laptops in the price range of Rs 20000/- - Rs 30000/ -
Storage
Nowadays many laptops are coming with Cloud storage options. However, local storage is still very handy and many people feel more comfortable storing their sensitive data locally rather than in Cloud. Hence, regular home-usage laptops must have local storage capacity of 1 TB HDD or more, with Cloud storage option.
Monitor Size
Long hours of laptop usage can ruin the eyes. Further, many details and graphics are better visible on a large screen. Hence, monitor should have 14 Inches size or more. If one can get a touch-screen 14 Inches laptop, it would be the best.
Weight
A large laptop often becomes heavy and is difficult to carry. Portability should be managed with the size. Hence, a regular usage laptop should not be more than 1 kg in weight, preferably less than 1 Kg.
RAM
For regular home usage, a laptop should have 4 - 8 GB extendable RAM of DDR4 type or later.
Processor and Graphics
The processor should be of as advanced generation as possible, with a speed of not less than 1.5 GHz, preferably more. Graphics processor should be compatible with the processor and of the highest variety available. The buyer should do some market research to see what the latest processor models are available in the market and should ascertain their speed etc.
It is to be remembered, that the processor takes longer to process large local HDD storage and hence, for storage of 1 TB or more, both processor speed and RAM configuration should be high, otherwise the laptop will be slow even with a well known processor brand name.
Battery Life
With long hours of work and unstable electricity supply the battery back up should be optimum. 8 hours would be ideal, but 6 hours should be the minimum battery back up.
Other Considerations
A regular home usage laptop should have as many latest generation USB ports as possible, at least 1 HDMI port of the latest generation, webcam with good resolution, password security feature, Wi-Fi gen 5 or later, pre-installed Windows 10 or 11 OS and at least 1 year extendable on-site warranty.
Keyboard guard should be bought along with the laptop. Keyboard guard should fit on the keyboard properly.
The resellers should advise the buyers to not go for laptops which have lesser features than these and the buyers should take care that the resellers are giving them the best value for their money.
If the reseller can add value to the features by offering them extended servicing and repair warranty at their home, it will go a long way in the buyer deciding to buy from the reseller.
