Telecom companies offer free calls to Nepal

In support to Nepal in the hour of need, top telecom service providers and social media sites have been extending their help to connect the stranded people in Kathmandu. All the operators are providing help to the affected by providing seamless communication during time of natural disaster.

Over 4400 people have been reported dead in an earthquake that rocked Nepal on April 25. Thousands of people are left homeless and stranded.

As a small gesture towards humanity country’s top telecom operator Bharti Airtel has decided to offer free calls to Nepal so that people from India can reach out to their near and dear ones in the time of crisis.

Similarly, Videocon Group extends all ISD calls to earthquake-hit Nepal at local call rates for 2 days. Videocon Telecom shall charge all ISD made from its Network to Nepal at local calling rate of 90p/min against the ISD rate of Rs 9.2 per min.

Airtel spokesperson said we have decided to offer all calls on the Airtel network from India to Nepal completely free of cost for the next 48 hours effective April 25, midnight, thus enabling customers across the country get in touch with their families and friends in Nepal.

Moreover, Airtel spokesperson also said that there has been no report of any damages to Airtel network in any of the affected areas.

In response to the earthquake in Nepal, Viber has switched off ‘Viber Out’ billing so users in Nepal can make free calls to mobile and land line numbers anywhere for the next 48 hours. We hope this will prove helpful to anyone trying to reach friends and family in this region.

Another telecom service provider, Aircel offers free calling and incoming roaming to Nepal. The company said in a press release that all calls from India to Nepal by Aircel customers will be free for two days i.e. 27th and 28th April. This facility has been extended to all Aircel customers across India for the next 48 hours, in light of the vulnerable situation prevailing in Nepal after the massive earthquake hit the country yesterday.

The offer has been extended to all prepaid and postpaid customers of Aircel. Additionally, those customers travelling to Nepal during this hour of crisis will also get free incoming while roaming into Nepal for the next 48 hours. Aircel has also waived off international roaming rental deduction for its prepaid customers.

Anupam Vasudev, Chief Marketing Officer of Aircel, said, “We are extremely distressed to see the mass devastation in Nepal caused by the earthquake and our hearts go out to all affected by this reflection of nature. We sincerely hope that our efforts in connecting the families and friends of the affected in this time of need helps and support them.”

Seeing the magnitude of earthquake in Nepal, Vodafone has offered local calls from India to Nepal for the next 2 days.
