WhatsApp is testing yet another feature in its beta version on Android. This time the instant messaging gaint has added launcher app shortcuts to its IM platform. These shortcuts allow users to access certain features inside the app directly by tapping on them.
As spotted by Android Police, the beta version brings shortcut app launcher for WhatsApp's camera and for launching new chats as well as accessing starred conversations (up to three). As of now, these conversations are chosen in a random order. However, the final version may bring chats in a more streamlined manner, for instance they could show starred conversations or chats that have been pinned by the user.
It is worth adding that these launcher icon options can also be dragged out of the template and used as a separate app. Also, adding a shortcut for the WhatsApp camera and the chat have already been present as home screen widgets on Android smartphones. This makes the aforementioned new feature redundant.
Interested users can get their hands on the particular feature by joining the Beta Programme or can side load the APK file.
WhatsApp recently announced that it has reached 1 billion daily active users. "Just last year, we shared that one billion people around the world use WhatsApp every month. Today, we are excited and proud to share that one billion people around the world use WhatsApp every day to stay in touch with their family and friends," said the company in a blog post.
Facebook-owned company said that it now has 1.3 billion monthly active users and witnesses around 55 billion messages sent by users every day. Furthermore, WhatsApp users share almost 4.5 billion images and 1 billion videos every day.
